Many times, we give and receive gifts that are so forgettable we can’t remember what we gave or who gave us something even just a few days after the fact. Put more thought into gift giving by looking for unique gifts that the recipients will really appreciate. Unique gifts are those that elicit big smiles and loud exclamations of surprise and delight.

Some can be simply fun to have, while others have pragmatic functions. The common thing is that they are all memorable. If you are at a loss as to what to give, look into handmade products. Items like handmade jewelry boxes, artwork and furnishings are always appreciated and are guaranteed to have a one-of-a-kind appeal

One of the most beautiful things in life is nature and what is created from what nature has to offer. Wood is are passion in it natural form. You can find it in logs along side the highways, on beaches, even in your own backyard, or simply stopping by your local specialty wood or lumber store. We find a wide variety of woods at our local specialty wood store, like Brazilian cherry (AKA Jatoba wood);  it is a very dense, super heavy hardwood and is very popular with woodworks and craftmen in making flooring and furniture, we find it to be great for making wood jewelry boxes, as it finishes beautifully.

My husband and myself spend a great deal of time in our work shop, quality is important to us. We take a lot of time sanding and finishing our jewelry boxes, and use a rayon fiber flocking on the inside of all the drawers for that final rich and velvety touch, which helps protect your most valued jewelry or keepsake pieces. As woodworkers, we take a lot of pride in our finished product, so you, would want to pass them down to future generations to come. Truly, an heirloom jewelry box that will be enjoyed for many years.

Caring for Silver

Silver is a metal that requires a certain amount of care and with reason.  Items such as handmade silver jewelry are meticulous pieces and often difficult to recreate, so putting an equal amount of care into something that an artisan put in to creating it is paramount.

Oftentimes, you’ll find that everyday usage and contact into something like foods could cause tarnish in silver. When you’re not using your jewelry, it’s a good idea to keep them in a box, away from the elements. An anti-phosphate strip and the occasional wash with warm water should keep your jewelry looking new.

Here are some really easy and quick tips to remember so you can keep your necklace or bracelet looking new:

1.  Don’t use Toothpaste, ever, as a silver polish. Many toothpastes ingredients which even in trace amounts may cause serious damage. Only use silver polishes.

2. Don’t use polishes that have dried-up (the abrasive particles are now much too concentrated and will harm your silver), don’t use steel wool or any type of scouring pads (too abrasive), or chemical dips (too toxic).

3. Removing Labels. Try using a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, then the label should come off easily. Remove any sticky residues with isopropyl alcohol. Any discoloration can be removed with a tiny bit of silver polish.

4. Always use the smallest amount of polish possible.

5. Never rub polish in a circular motion.

6. Keep your jewelry stored in a two drawer jewelry box to maintain its shine.

My daughter’s twelfth birthday is coming up soon and I want to do something special for her. This is the last year before her teens come up, and I have heard from all of my friends that it sort of changes once the teenage years happen, as though my daughter will become a totally different person.

I don’t totally buy into all of that, but I do want to get her something that she will remember for a long time. I was thinking about getting her a wooden jewelry box so that she could keep her treasures in a safe place and have them for special occasions.

Buying the Right Mother’s Day Gift

It’s hard to believe, but it’s already that time of year again. It’s time to acknowledge just how much our mothers mean to us with the observance of Mother’s Day. Many people struggle with finding a gift, however, because they don’t want to choose something impersonal. If that’s the case, just make sure to choose a gift according to your mother’s interests. If she’s a music lover, for example, purchase her that new CD she’s been eyeing, or for a more extravagant gift, go with an iPod.

Or perhaps your mother is more interested in jewelry. If that’s the case, look for pieces that highlight her clothing and complement her other pieces. For people who don’t feel comfortable purchasing jewelry, a handmade wooden jewelry box is an ideal gift for a jewelry lover. As with any gift, it’s not the specific purchase that matters; it’s that you’ve put in the time and effort to pick something you believe she’ll really love. Just think of all the times your mom made you your lunch before school or drove you to soccer practice, and make sure to give her a gift that makes her feel pampered, special, and appreciated.
