Memorable Birthday Gift

For my 50th birthday, I had a small dinner party at an upscale restaurant. It was great fun to be surrounded by my closest friends and family members as I celebrated being “over the hill.” At the end of the evening, my husband said that he hadn’t yet given me my birthday gift. Since he had arranged the dinner and paid for the whole event I thought that had been my gift.

When we got home he handed me a wrapped package. Inside was a beautiful, handcrafted wooden jewelry box. To my surprise, when I lifted the lid I found a gorgeous diamond necklace. It is an incredible, memorable gift that I wear all the time and store dutifully in the jewelry box when it’s not around my neck.

Purchasing Unique Jewelry Boxes

For my daughter’s 16th birthday we didn’t buy her a car, but her father and I did get her some nice jewelry from Tiffany’s. We believe that since she is becoming a young woman, she can start wearing more valuable jewelry. To protect her new baubles, we also bought her a handcrafted jewelry box.

I tend to purchase unique jewelry boxes from a particular website because I have found the artist’s standards to be quite high in the past. He understands the different storing needs for different types of jewelry. There are plenty of hooks for chains and earrings, padded rolls for rings, and small drawers for bracelets in each of his jewelry boxes. He also has the forethought to have small padded pouches for loose jewels and stud earrings.

Customizing Your Own Creation

If you’ve already experimented with making your own basic jewelry boxes and want to enhance one of your creations with a decorative finish and luxury, here are a few steps that will help you to create an even classier jewelry box.

1. Cut out pieces of velvet that has a sticky backside to line the bottom, inside top and inner sides of your jewelry box. Purple velvet is my favorite!
2. Make a small incision in the velvet with a utility knife to insert your mirror. Then, attach the mirror with glue and let it dry completely.
3. Paint the outside of the box with acrylic paint (maybe a soft green to complement the purple velvet) and then let dry.

Making unique wooden jewelry boxes is a joyful hobby indeed!

Making a Box for Your Jewels

While professionally handcrafted jewelry boxes provide a magnificent craftsmanship that is tough to beat, it can still be fun to make your own. Such a crafty activity is especially fun to share with your kids and is a great activity when you’re hosting a slumber party for your child.

1. Starting with 5 pieces of wood (of any size you like), you’ll lay out the bottom and sides of your jewelry box.
2. Use a pen to mark where you’ll make small incisions in the wood to create teeth that will hold the side pieces together. Make the cuts using a small knife or jigsaw.
3. Put glue in the teeth incisions to help hold the pieces together and then allow the glue to dry.
4. Cutout the lid from a flat wood panel, making sure to include teeth on both ends.
5. Sand the wood down with a simple piece of sandpaper to remove any flaws or markings.
6. Paint the box with acrylic paint, let it dry and then attach the hinges to the top of the box.

Once you have this type mastered, you’ll be ready to move up to a large two drawer jewelry box. But remember, adult supervision (or even assistance) is always encouraged!

Eternity Rings

An eternity ring is a women’s ring made of a precious metal with a continuous line of cut gemstones. As gemstones can be uncomfortable all the way around a band, there are styles where the gems only go halfway around the ring. These rings are often given as anniversary presents from husbands to wives or even as birth gifts, in which case the gemstone would correspond to the month the child was born in.

Often, these birth rings are worn on either side of an engagement ring. Many women consider them heirloom pieces and will pass the rings to the child it represents. To make these eternity rings really last a lifetime it’s important to store them in heirloom jewelry boxes. These quality jewelry boxes are beautiful in their own right, but are also specifically fitted to keep your rings and jewelry from getting scratched.

African Wood Jewelry Box

I love all jewelry from earrings to bracelets to necklaces and more. I’m fascinated by all sorts of baubles whether they’re expensive pieces of precious stones or excellent glass costume jewelry imitations. With so much jewelry, I’ve learned that it’s important to have proper storage. One of my favorite jewelry boxes is made from African wood.

Bubinga, known scientifically as Guibourtia arnoldiana, is a species of tree native to western African countries like Gabon and Angola. The wood is incredibly valuable because of its beauty and durability. It is also resistant to wood-boring insects, like termites. I know that my jewelry is safe inside the Bubinga wood jewelry box!

Most women love to collect jewelry – fine jewelry, costume jewelry, you name it – but it’s equally important to consider the proper storage of your jewelry as it is to enhance your collection. My personal favorites are bangle bracelets; I swear I have them in just about every color, but my absolute favorite set is the turquoise bangles.

I keep my bangles in a unique jewelry box that I found at a garage sale, what a find! It’s a handcrafted maple wood box that opens with a hinged lid. Inside you’d find a plum-tinted velvet lining and on top of the box is the outline of a butterfly that has been carved into the wood. I have other jewelry boxes for the rest of my collection, but I reserve the best box for my favorite pieces.

The Key to Collectibles

My Grandpa Joe loves to collect keys. A strange fetish to some, his collection dates all the way back to the early 1900’s. He’s pretty old, 79 years old to be exact, but his array of keys in indeed older. He started his collection at age 6 with three keys that he inherited from his dad who had also been a key collector. Today, he has more than 2,000 keys in his collection.

He keeps his keys in several handmade wooden jewelry boxes that are spread across his bedroom dresser. And every so often he opens his jewelry boxes and fingers through the hundreds of keys kept in each one. I’ve never really understood his reasoning behind his collection, other than that it reminds him of family. Sometimes I joke that he hopes to find a key that will unlock a magnificent treasure.
