Playing Dress Up At Grandmas

One of the greatest things about going to grandma’s house was playing dress up with all her clothes and jewelry. My sister and I would just go crazy in her closet. Our grandmother refused to throw anything away so she had some really unique clothing and jewelry.

My sister and I would go to the back of our grandma’s closet and search in her jewelry box. She had two large two drawer jewelry boxes. When we asked her why she had two jewelry boxes she said to us “one was for me and one was one for my sister. My two favorite girls, that and I never know what I want to use for an accessory.” I think that my sister and I both knew that she wasn’t lacking in choices.

Setting Up Your Jewelry Box

You’ve bought jewelry boxes for your baubles, isn’t that enough to ensure your jewelry’s well-being? Simply put: no. You also need to properly organize and store your jewels within the box.

For instance, you’ll want divide your jewelry in two: one section is for the jewelry you wear every day and the other is for jewelry you wear only some of the time. Place the jewelry you wear the most in the top drawer of your two drawer jewelry boxes. You’ll also want to make sure necklaces are clasped, earrings have their backings secured, and bag delicate pieces separately. These are just a few precautions you should take to preserve the life of your jewelry.

Adding Velvet Lining

Storing your jewelry in a jewelry armoire is a good first step to protecting your valuables. Better still if the drawers are lined with a soft fabric that will help prevent jewelry getting scratched. If you are currently using a jewelry box that is unlined, but you love the design, then don’t worry; you can line the drawers yourself!

At your local fabric or craft store you can buy self-adhesive velvet sheets. Measure the interior of each jewelry box drawer. Using those measurements, cut the velvet sheets down to size. Take the lining off the back of the sheets and attach the velvet to the interior of the drawers, pressing firmly down on the edges and corners.

Making a Box for Your Jewels

While professionally handcrafted jewelry boxes provide a magnificent craftsmanship that is tough to beat, it can still be fun to make your own. Such a crafty activity is especially fun to share with your kids and is a great activity when you’re hosting a slumber party for your child.

1. Starting with 5 pieces of wood (of any size you like), you’ll lay out the bottom and sides of your jewelry box.
2. Use a pen to mark where you’ll make small incisions in the wood to create teeth that will hold the side pieces together. Make the cuts using a small knife or jigsaw.
3. Put glue in the teeth incisions to help hold the pieces together and then allow the glue to dry.
4. Cutout the lid from a flat wood panel, making sure to include teeth on both ends.
5. Sand the wood down with a simple piece of sandpaper to remove any flaws or markings.
6. Paint the box with acrylic paint, let it dry and then attach the hinges to the top of the box.

Once you have this type mastered, you’ll be ready to move up to a large two drawer jewelry box. But remember, adult supervision (or even assistance) is always encouraged!

Eternity Rings

An eternity ring is a women’s ring made of a precious metal with a continuous line of cut gemstones. As gemstones can be uncomfortable all the way around a band, there are styles where the gems only go halfway around the ring. These rings are often given as anniversary presents from husbands to wives or even as birth gifts, in which case the gemstone would correspond to the month the child was born in.

Often, these birth rings are worn on either side of an engagement ring. Many women consider them heirloom pieces and will pass the rings to the child it represents. To make these eternity rings really last a lifetime it’s important to store them in heirloom jewelry boxes. These quality jewelry boxes are beautiful in their own right, but are also specifically fitted to keep your rings and jewelry from getting scratched.

African Wood Jewelry Box

I love all jewelry from earrings to bracelets to necklaces and more. I’m fascinated by all sorts of baubles whether they’re expensive pieces of precious stones or excellent glass costume jewelry imitations. With so much jewelry, I’ve learned that it’s important to have proper storage. One of my favorite jewelry boxes is made from African wood.

Bubinga, known scientifically as Guibourtia arnoldiana, is a species of tree native to western African countries like Gabon and Angola. The wood is incredibly valuable because of its beauty and durability. It is also resistant to wood-boring insects, like termites. I know that my jewelry is safe inside the Bubinga wood jewelry box!

Purple-heart Jewelry BoxWe are always looking for that special gift to give on a special occasion. Knowledge of the persons taste, always helps in shopping for that special person, like most women, we tend to think ahead. Flowers and candy are last minute thoughts and jewelry seems to be very popular as a gift as well. We don’t always think of accessories that would go nicely with flowers, like a crystal vase for someone that loves flowers or that handmade candy dish for your chocolate loving friends.

I have always found giving accessory like gifts, like a handcrafted unusual jewelry box, would be appreciated more than just flowers or candy. Its those thoughtful gifts that are always remembered every time that crystal vase or handmade candy dish or jewelry box is being used. Think of a gift that will last and bring happiness and a smile each and every day, it really works.
